Brief History of Emmanuel Church - Birkenhead

Emmanuel Church is situated in the heart of Birkenhead. To many it may appear to be a rather insignificant red brick building but surrounding it is a great history.  Built in 1875, it was bought from the Welsh Methodists in 1917, when it was given its name by the purchaser, a Mr J. D. Drysdale.  The church’s past history encompasses great missionary outreaches to various villages in the North West and to further worldwide fields.  It has always been known as a missionary church and has and still does, place a great emphasis, on both prayer and mission.

Part of its past history was the founding of Emmanuel Bible College, which began in 1920, however in 1997 the college ceased operation and became an integral part of The Nazarene Theological College, Manchester where, in 2004, a new library and classroom called the Emmanuel Centre was opened to mark that transition.

Every year in Manchester, and online, there is an annual lecture on missiology (the study of the missionary function of the Christian Church) under the heading of “The Drysdale Lecture.”

Inevitably life moves on but Emmanuel Church, as an independent church, has remained to serve the people of Birkenhead and the Wirral by continuing to provide a place of worship for our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and to take His word out to a much needed World.

When another independent church amalgamated with the Emmanuel Church the name was changed to “The Link with Emmanuel Christian Fellowship”.  However in January 2022 the name was simplified to “Emmanuel Christian Fellowship” maintaining the prominence of the name “Emmanuel,” which means “God with Us” and is a name for Jesus.

God has certainly been with the “Emmanuel Church.” This can be seen by taking an in depth glance at its history.  From the very beginning, when the first people walked in through its doors, God has, without fail, supplied all that was necessary to meet its needs and to make disciples of all Nations.

This has also been true since the beginning of this year, God has certainly been with us, as the church has gone from strength to strength.

We would love to meet you.  You will find a great welcome.

blessed is the one who takes refuge in Him.  Psalm 34: 8 NIV
